The Teacher Gap

Allen and Sims

I saw people talking about this book on Twitter and thought it might be worth a look. It's an examination of education's recruitment and retention issues offering some very innovative ideas as a way forward.

Allen and Sims use interviews with both practising teachers and those who have left the profession to discuss workload, recruitment and accountability. Their plans to remodel teacher training and support in schools is ambitious to say the least but grounded in research.

If I had one criticism it would be that there are few accounts from existing teachers who are actually receiving the support and encouragement they need so a depressing picture is painted in places.

If you are interested in how education could change to raise retention then this is well worth a read.
