Why do we look at self-help books?

Wherever you look in bookstores now you can't help seeing the latest self-help book and I was wondering what is the fascination we have about them ore is it a need?

Somewhere we have been set this expectation of appropriate wealth, happiness, wellbeing, lifestyle and when we don't measure up to these expectations we seek the answers to its achievement. Books seem to offer an answer for many but though thought provoking (and very good for my business) are they really the solution ?

I believe the solution comes through conversation - talking things through with ANother, being able to set out an ambition and discuss its relevance, where the idea comes from and whether or not it is realistic. Yes those conversations can be aided by the latest idea/research but a book cannot replace the questions raised and asked in response to the spoken thought of another.

Maybe we rely on books because we are afraid to communicate our worries and fears. Maybe we just lost sight of how to communicate with each other without the aid of a mobile device. maybe?
